Abstract

The first evidence of foliate papillae formation observed on the 16th day of intrauterine life as a solid epithelial downgrowth into the underlying mesenchymal tissue • The primordial taste buds were seen at the top of the papillae and within the epithelial downgrowths on the 2nd day postnatally • Splitting of the epithelial downgrowths to form the foliate gutters began on the 4th day and was completed by the 14th day postnatally. At the age of 14th to 21st day postnatally , the shape and structure of foliate papillae and the taste buds were seen to be simillar to the adult confirmation • The foliate papillae’ were readily visible and clearly separated by the gutters • The taste buds were elongated in shape and were arranged at right angles to the sides of the papillae • Their bases projected into the subjacent connective tissue , while their apices were found to communicate with the foliate gutters through the gustatory pores • On the 15th day of intrauterine life, a ring of solid epithelial down growths , penetrated from the surface
