Abstract

This study was carried on 70 patients with variety of malignant neoplasms involving the head and neck. ” The results obtained can be summarized as following:- ” In the prospective group - TSH exhibited two phases significant initial decrease at 2 weeks after radiotherapy followed by gradual increase - T3 and T4 showed slight temporary increase after 2 weeks of radiotherapy followed by gradual significant decrease. - Anti TPO-Ab increased from the 3rd month forwards. - FTI showed significant decrease after the 6th month. ” In the retrospective group - TSH level showed statistically significant elevation than the base line between 3,5 year. - Anti TPO-Ab increased significantly in the 4th year” Chemical hypothyroidism was noticed at higher rate than clinical hypothyroidism in the 1st 3 years after radiotherapy in both groups. ” Chemical hypothyroidism was the earliest dysfunction noticed in the retrospective group( observed after 6 month). ” Clinical hypothyroidism was observed later during follow up ” The use of adjuvant chemotherapy did not influence the incidence of thyroid dysfunction after irradiation. ” Increase of the dose was associated with increase the incidence of nodularity and inhomogenity in both groups. Abnormal sonography and scan was more frequent between cases with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism than euthyroid patients. Thyroid gland- thyroiditis - Thyrotoxicocis - radiation injury - hypothyroidism - benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms.
