Abstract

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been applied inmany fields of cardiology with high proven superiority. TEE is superior to the transthoracic approach for characterizing the anatomy and function of the mitral valve but there is more discomfort, a small risk, and higher cost in both time and money when transesophageal echocardiography is used. This study was conducted to test the diagnostic capability of TEE for diagnosing mitral valve diseases (stenosis and/or regurge) and compare these result with conventional precordial imaging and intra, operative findings. The present study comprised sixty patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease who underwent open mitral valve procedures at cardiothoracic surgery department, Mansoura University Hospital, in the period from October 1997 to April 2000. The included patients had an age which ranged between 12-51 years (mean age 28 + 6.78 years), 26 males and 34 female. All patients were subjected to history taking, thorough clinical examination, 12 lead electrocardiogram and chest radiography. Transthoracic echocardiography using, M-mode, two-dimensional and Doppler was performed 3 days prior to surgery followed by transesophageal echocardiography. Intra operative pathologic findings of the mitral valve and left atrium were recorded by the surgeon The collected data of all patients were collected in patients sheets, then it was filed on an IBM PC computer which was used to get the statistical summary of the results and to execute the statistical tests.
