Abstract

Both alk and lasik procedures were proved to be an effective techniques for surgical correction of moderate and high myopia with a significant difference that, LASIK procedure was more effective than ALK procedure especially for treatment of astigmatism that was not corrected by ALK technique. Both ALK and LASIK procedures affect contrast visual acuity without and with glare and the degree affection was more after ALK than after LASIK procedure. Almost all eyes in our study showed some sort of regression which was more in high myopia than in moderate myopia and after ALK procedure than after LASIK procedure.Enhancement is one of the advantages of both procedures which can be done after a period of time. The predictability of correction by LASIK procedure was significantly higher than, that of correction by ALK procedure and it decreased proportionally in both techniques with the increase in the degree of myopia. Regarding the safety, LASIK procedure was more safe than ALK procedure. Visual recovery after LASIK procedure was more rapid than after ALK procedure.LASIK procedure is simpler to perform and less bothersome for the patient but much more expensive than ALK procedure . Patients satisfaction were more after LASIK procedure than after ALK procedure and it decreased proportionally in both techniques with the increase in the degree of myopia.
