Abstract

Clinical, epidemiological and pathological data support the presence of a specific cardiomyopathy related to diabetes mellitus. Despite the use of the term diabetic cardiomyopathy, considerable debate exists about the exact nature and cause of cardiac dysfunction attributed to diabetes . However, the data at band do not clearly relate the type, duration and severity of diabetes or the presence of microvascular disease to the time of onset or the degree of ventricular dysfunction. There is conflicting evidence regarding the relative importance of small vessel disease, interstitial fibrosis and metabolic derrangements in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy . Moreover, although the relationship of autonomic nervous system dysfunction to enhanced mortality is established, the cause and effect nature of the relationship is not completely clear. This was the stimulus to plan for this study .. Hence, the aim of the present work is: * To evaluate the preclinical and cl inical cardiac affection in IDDM . * To throw a beam of light on the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy * Trying to introduce a guide help in prevention of the problem. The present study included 51 children with IDDM take up consecutively from those admitted to the inpatients word of Mansoura Children Hospital and from the patients who come for follow up in the out patient clinic of diabetes in the period from November 1998 to April 2000
