Abstract

The evidence continues to grow in support of the concept that human health is linked closely to the environment in which we live and work. Scientists agree that as environmental quality deteriorates, harmful health effects are inevitable. The World Health Organization (WHO), the Commission of the European Communities and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), have all in the course of the last few years, emphasized the need for clinical waste to be safely managed from the point of production via various methods of movement to its final disposal .In the past, items used in medical facilities had been washed and cleaned or sterilized after use, but now there is a major conversion to the use of single-use plastics and disposable materials such as syringes, lathers probes, urine bags, protective clothing, linen and dining equipment, these became the accepted substitutes for much of the long life equipments previously used .This switch to the single-use equipments coupled with waste disposal in plastic bags , gave rise to a marked increase in the output of clinical wastes which are considered one of the most serious health problems that constitutes a risk to public health if not properly managed. Proper management of clinical waste and careful disposal will minimize the risk of infection or injury. This study was conducted upon 40 hospitals which are approximately one third of the total number of hospitals in Dakahlia Governorate, the 40 hospitals include the 4 major categories which are university, MOH, insurance and private hospitals the number of hospitals in each category was 3, 23, 3 and11 respectively. The study was aiming at evaluating of the problem of clinical waste in the hospitals of the Governorate.
