Abstract
Peripheral neuropathy has been reported in association with chronic liver diseases including hepatic fibrosis and chronic hepatitis. But some authors were reluctant to accept the existence of this neuropathy. Also. The reports have varied regarding the incidence and characters tics of this neuropathy. The aim of this study was to assess the peripheral neuropathy in hepatic patients. Also, we aimed to delineate the role of late response in early detection of such neuropathy and comparing the results with the ordinary methods of nerve conduction techniques. Thirty patients with various hepatic disorders were studied. They were divided into two main classes according to the nature of liver diseases. 19 were with bilharizal hepatic fibrosis and 11 were with hepatitis c virus. A control group of thirty patients were taken. A comparison study then was done between the control group and the patient as regard electromyographic findings in both distal and proximal muscles in the upper and lower limbs. Included in the comparison study were also motor conduction studies in median and lateral popliteal nerves, sensory conduction studies in both sural and median nerves, F-wave study, and H-reflex study. Our results showed that late responses studies are not valuable in the evaluation of the presence of peripheral neuropathy in hepatic patients.
