Abstract

Evaluate the sealing ability of a silicon based obturating material (GuttaFlow) in comparison with other obturating systems. 2- Compare the conventionally used dye-penetration leakage testing technique with a new quantitative dye-extraction technique, when used to examine the sealability of these materials. - The following conclusions and recommendations are drawn : 1. GuttaFlow seems to be a promising filling material because of the good sealing ability and proper adaptation to root canal walls when compared with commonly used zinc oxide-eugenol sealer and cold lateral compaction of gutta-percha. Although it presents a comparable leakproof capability with the thermally softened gutta-percha it may have the advantage of imposing less risk of thermal damage to the surrounding periradicular tissues when used clinically being placed in cold condition. Nevertheless, further studies addressing the cytotoxicity and overfilling of the root canal have to be established. 2. There is no correlation between the conventionally used dye-penetration leakage testing technique and the quantitative dye-extraction technique. However, the dye-extraction technique may add a great advantage when used for measuring microleakage because of its accuracy. It needs less time and can be applied with an available equipment.
