Abstract Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms. It possesses unique properties that are being defined and applied to biological systems as well as to clinical practice. As a molecule containing a large excess of energy, it manifests bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal action that may make it a treatment of choice in certain conditions and an adjunct to treatment in others. Ozone therapy is clearly established as a treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications, including diabetic foot ulcers. It exerts beneficial effects because it improves glycemic control by increasing insulin secretion or its effectiveness. It improves the diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Also, it can improve blood circulation and oxygen delivery to ischemic tissues, corrects the chronic oxidative stress, associated with diabetes mellitus and its complications. Ozone therapy can be used in body weight reduction. It acts as a lipolytic agent, when given subcutaneously. Ozone therapy is contra-indicated in thyrotoxicosis and may be useful in the treatment of hypothyrodism and nodular lesions of the thyroid. |
