Abstract
This study was carried out on 15 female patients with maxillary edentulous ridges opposing bilateral mandibular distal extension ridges with the six anterior teeth remaining. Buccolingual and mesiodistal stresses transmitted on distal extension ridge by removable partial denture retained with different esthetic clasps were investigated. Design of this study permits selection of patient for each group equally. where distal extension removable partial denture retained with RPI clasp for group A, and I bar clasp for group B, Equipoise clasp for group C, Twin clasp for group D and flexible lingual clasp for group E. The stresses transmitted by RPD with different esthetic clasps along distal extension ridge were evaluated by twodimensional strain gauges that were cemented on the fitting surface of the distal extension area in different locations. The strain gauges were cemented either in the anterior or posterior saddle area in the buccal, crest and lingual directions. Each three of these strain gauges were located anteriorly where posteriorly. The result of this study showed that. 1-The buccolingual stresses transmitted by PPD retained with RPI clasp were evenly distributed in the posterior ridge area while it was relatively evenly distributed in the anterior ridge area. 2-Both buccolingual and mesiodistal stresses transmitted by RPD retained with I bar, equipoise, twin flex, and flexible lingual clasps were unevenly distributed. 3-The least amount of buccolingual stresses were transmitted in the posterior ridge area distal extension RPD with retained with Ibar clasp. Controversially distal extension RPD retained with flexible lingual clasp transmitted heavy buccolingually and mesiodistally stress. 4-The least amount of buccal stresses was transmitted on the anterior ridge area by distal extension RPD retained with equipoise clasp and in the lingual with twin flex clasp.
