Abstract

The present investigation aimed to study the effects of vernalization, some enzyme modulators and their interaction on growth, leaf anatomy, flowering and certain biochemical constituents of three Narcissus cvs. The anatomical study of the carpel was also investigated for diagnosing Genus Narcissus. A pot experiment was carried out in the greenhouse and Labs. of the Agric. Bot. Dept., Fac.of Agric, Mansoura Univ. during the two growing seasons of 1998/99 and 2000/2001. The studied Narcissus cvs were Carlton, Ice Follies (Largecupped narcissi) and ElBalady (Tazetta narcissi). Vernalization was applied by refrigerating the bulbs in trays at 4 C for either 6 or 8 weeks. Enzyme modulators used were glyphosate and MDCA, both either at 1 or 2 mM, applied as a foliar spray. The results could be summarized as follows: a) Growth parameters: 1 Vernalization, glyphosate and MDCA at 2 mM decreased the vegetative growth of Narcissus cvs represented by leaf number and its dimensions as well as leaf area/plant and fresh and dry weights of both shoots and roots. 2 Enzyme modulators at 2 mM showed an additive effect to that of VER for 8 weeks in this respect. b) Flowering characters: 1 VER increased flowering percentage and accelerated flowering whereas decreased flowering period in all tested cvs. The most flowering advancement was recorded in Ice Follies cv whereas the least in ElBalady cv. In addition, it increased scape length and number of flowers /scape where the scape bears more than one flower (cv ElBalady) whereas, generally, reduced dimensions of the flower and its constituent parts. The high CS duration was more beneficial on accelerating flowering. 2 Glyphosate at 1 mM increased flowering percentage. At 2 mM glyphosate increased flowering percentage in Carlton and Ice Follies cvs whereas decreased it in ElBalady cv. 3 Glyphosate at 2 mM, generally reduced the dimensions of the flower and its parts in all tested cvs. 4 MDCA at 1 and 2 mM increased flowering percentage in Carlton and Ice Follies cvs. Similarly MDCA at 2 mM increased flowering percentage in ElBalady cv. 5 MDCA at 2 mM accelerated flowering and increased flower diameter, tepal length, tepal width, trumpet height and diameter in Carlton and Ice Follies cvs as well as scape length and number of flowers/scape in ElBalady cv.
