Abstract

Idiopathic scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that develops during the growth years without detectable cause. Such curvatures appear most frequently during the adolescent growth spurt, but may also develop much earlier in childhood. If the onset is before 3 years of age, the term infantile idiopathic scoliosis is applied. When onset is after the third birthday but before the adolescent growth spurt, the term juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is used, and onset of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis after the age of 10 years (onset of adolescent) until puberty. While it is easy to divide idiopathic scoliosis into these three types, clinically the dividing line is not always clear and there is often overlap. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is defined as a structural lateral curvature of the spine, for which no cause can be established, that occurs at or near the onset of puberty. The diagnsis is suspected by the presence of body asymmetries but can be confirmed only by the presence of at least 10°, measured by the Cobb method, on a standing upright radiograph of the spine. Screening for scoliosis in school programs is prescriptive screening with a strong element of case finding on a selected group at higher risk for the disease. Screening is defined as ”the presumptive identification of unrecognized disease or defects by the application of rests, examinations or other procedures, which can be applied rapidly. Screening rests sort out apparently healthy persons who probably do not have a disease from those who probably do have the disease. A screening test is not intended to be diagnostic. Persons with suspicious and necessary treatment. There are three different methods of detection of idiopathic scoliosis, incidentally by doctors, incidentally by parents and friends, and school i screening programs. The importance of school screening programs is coming.
