Abstract

Our study includes 40 patients with unilocular ovarian cysts detected by transvaginal sonography. Then a sample of the intracystic fluid is obtained either through transvaginal ultrasound guided aspiration cytology or by puncture during laparotomy or laparoscopy. Then the cysts are classified into functional or non-functional category according to the results of transvaginal sonography, cytology and E2 content of the intracystic fluid.
In only 18 cases the histopathology of the cysts were available as a golden standard for measuring the sensitivity, specificity , positive and negative predictive values and the diagnostic accuracy of each procedure alone and in combination.
We found that:
The diagnostic accuracy of transvaginal sonography (61.1 %), cytology (72.2%) and E2 (88%) in differentiating unilocular ovarian cysts into functional and non-functional is markedly increased when we consider the triad” ultrasound, cytology and measuring E2 content of the intra cystic fluid” hence the triad of ultrasound, cytology and E2 (UCE) can differentiate between functional and non-functional ovarian cysts with higher accuracy.
