Abstract Preterm deliveries that produce premature infants represent 7% of total deleveries. This percent is expected to increase steadily in conjunction with the tremendous development in the pregnancy assistance techniques.over the last years. This hadled to a considerable increase in the rate of twin and higher order pregnancyand in tum preterm deliveries. The problems of preterm deliveries has been complicated by the fact that 90% ofthese deliveries art idiopathic and unpredictable. Preterm delivery is a great risk for the infant . especially for lung immaturity andthe deficiency of pulmonary surfactant that is essential for alveolar ventilation. Thisleads 10 the syndrome of respiratory distress (hyaline membrane disease) with its immediate and long-term complications. These complications need muchof effort andcost to treat. An important advances dealing with this problem has taken place over the lastdecade, the antenatal administration of corticosteroids, and the postnatal surfactant replacement therapy. Despite the extensiveresearch about the subject, the use of antenatal steroids isstill below the expected andthere is still controversies about the effect of repeatedcourseson fetal growth. Unresponsiveness to surfactant replacement has beendocumented in some cases. Objectives and Aim of the Study: This study had been designedtoinvestagatethefollowing:Different effects of the antenatal corticosteroid therapy on the incidence, immediate complicationsand late complications of the respiratory distresssyndrome orthe preterminfant. |
