Abstract

It was concluded that the internal organization as well as the histochemical features of the insectivorous bat kidney showed some differences comparing to that of frugivorous bat kidney. Such differences may be considered as an adaptive evolution of the renal concentrating ability in these investigated animals of different ecological niches and nature of diet. This adaptation expressed itself as a marked difference between both species in number of nephrons, volume of glomeruli, shape and length of renal papilla, relative medullary thickness and ultrastructure of both renal glomeruli and tubules.
