Abstract The floating foundation is an exact balance of weight removed from the site of the building against weight imposed. Deep excavations required for floating foundations in soft clay may cause heave, large settlement or and lateral displacement of the ground around the excavation. The objective of this study is two folds; the first is to build a nonlinear finite element model for the complete construction process of floating foundation using ANSYS code. The second is to study the influence of a number of factors affecting the response due to the construction process. Drukerprager nonlinear soil model is adopted for soil modeling while the reinforced concrete is considered as linear material. The effect of soil structure interaction is taken into consideration between the soil and raft and between the diaphragm wall and soil. Death and birth technique in ANSYS code is used to model the excavation and construction process; respectively. The death and birth technique enables to take into consideration the initial stresses due to soil weight. Finally, the history of deformations and stresses at different points in the base and the sides investigated. |
