Abstract

This study was carried out on 20 patients (11 female and 9 males) to evaluate the role of CT software program ?Denta Scan? in the pre­operative assessment of the mandibular and maxillary implant surgery. All patients were subjected to preoperative clinical and radiographic examined and subsequent implant placement. The radiographic examination include both conventional (peri­apical and panoramic) radiograph and denta scan. The pre­operative planning and the outcome at the surgery were compared. Analysis of the anatomic location of the implants inserted in the present study revealed that 24 % were inserted in the anterior region of the maxilla, 35% in the posterior region of the maxilla, 8% in the anterior region of the mandible and 33% in the posterior region of the mandible. The conventional radiograph was of limited values in determining the vertical or mesiodistal direction with any degree of certainty, also had a limited value in determining the bone density. The dental CT scan was useful because it provides accurate information about the height and width of the jaw as well as information about the location of vital structures, also enables the determination of bone density (quality). The results reported that 11% of the edentulous ridges exhibit a D2 bone density 64% exhibit a D3 bone density and 25% exhibit a D4 bone density. Depending on the result of this study the radiographic findings were correlated with clinical and operative findings, revealing a distinct advantages of the denta scan over the conventional radiographs in the pre­operative surgical planning for implant insertion.
