Abstract

This study aimed at achieving a number of critical objectives including: (1) developing an integrated approach of fabric structure characterization with emphasis on the surface and transient structural featuresusing capable computer programming systems, (2) relating fabric structural features to fabric performance characteristics so that the practical impacts of this study can be fully justified, (3) developing new testing techniques and methodologies that represent true contributions, and (4) developing structural models that explore the surface characteristics of textile fabrics (woven and knit fabrics). These objectives were met through the introduction of new surface and transient structural parameters including the Area Ratio, the Area Ratio parameters <U+2018>m<U+2019> and <U+2018>a<U+2019>, the Fiber Fraction (or Compactness) parameter, and the Fabric Hairiness parameter. In addition, parameters that were presented in previous studies such as fabric thicknesspressure characteristic curve, surface texture irregularity, and stickslip frictional patterns, were also addressed using new rigorous approaches of analysis. The study showed that many of the performance characteristics that distinguish between woven and knit fabrics can be explained accurately using the surface and transient structural parameters discussed in this study. Effects of surface treatments such as dyeing and finishing can also be explained using these parameters. Finally, effects of yarn type and spinning preparation on fabric properties can be explained using these parameters. On the experimental side, significant contributions were made in developing characterization techniques of critical structural and performance properties. These include: image analysis techniques of fabric patterns, surface texture, area ratio, pore size distribution analysis and fabric hairiness.
