Abstract

This study was done to study histologically the angiopathic changes of the tongue microcirculation in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats non treated and treated with either insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents (gliclazide). Ninety six male albino adult rats were used. The animals were sacrificed at 1, 4, 8 & 12 weeks from the beginning of the experiment. The tongue tissue prepared for both light and electron microscope, small part of each tongue is taken to investigate the tissue free radical, and the blood samples were taken to lipogram analysis. from this study we found that: <U+2022> Diabetes mellitus is a harmful disease for blood vessels associated with changes of the vascular structure as endothelial cell damage and proliferation; smooth muscle cell proliferation and phenotypic transmission from a contractile to a synthetic state; leading to ischemia and its draw backs, especially when the disease was chronic without rigid treatment. <U+2022> The main cause of diabetic atherogenesity is the changes in the serum lipogram, especially the increase of the LDL cholesterol which is more atherogenic and free radical production. <U+2022> Both sulfonylurea and insulin gave marked improvement of angiopathic changes and its possible inducing mechanisms. It is recommended from this study that: 1. Rigid control of diabetes could be achieved either by insulin or oral hypoglycemic gliclazide which may delay or minimize the peripheral microangiopathic changes of diabetes. 2. Further cooperation study between dentists and clinical pharmacologists should be done to explore or design therapeutic regimen which treat the mechanism of angiopathic changes rather than the symptoms.
