Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is a protzoan parasite that is uniquely adapted for penetrating and surviving within a wide range of host cells. This obligate intraccllular parasite is unwelcome guest in mammalian cells, often killing these ceils in the course of completing their life cycle. This parasite infect up to a third of the world?s population. Pregnant women who acquire recent infection during pregnancy and newborns who are congenital!y infected are among the most dangerous groups in whome the diagnosis of infection is most critical because this infection can lead to sever congenital diseases, abortion, IUFD, premature deiiveries and still birth. Routine serological tests are unreliable, and cann?t accurately differentiate between recent and past infection also it cann?t detect early infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate PCR test as a method of detection of Toxoplasma antigen (D.N.A) in the blood and amniotic fluid. This study was performed on 65 cases, 50 had complicated pregnancy while 15 had normal pregnancy taken as control. Every case was subjected to , history taking, general, abdominal examination, ultrosonographic examination, plain x ray for cases having congenital anomalies. It can be concluded that, PCR test either on serum or amniotic fluid is more sensitive, specific, accurate and detect infection earlier than other scrological tests in the diagnosis of toxpoplasmosis during pregnancy.
