Abstract In this thesis, the recent design work using strutandtie model are reanalyzed and extended to be applicable to all types of deep beams. Generally, the beams are classified into three types, namely, Type I, Type II, and Type III. Types I and II, are analyzed using both strutandtie model and 3D nonlinear finite element model. While, Type III, (slender beams) is analyzed using 3D nonlinear finite element approach. Based on concrete strength and shear spantodepth ratio (a/d), the effectiveness factor of concrete struts and nodal zones are modified. The strutandtie approach is applied to three main groups of simpledeep beams and two main groups of continuous deep beams that had been tested by Other researchers. A 3D nonlinear finite element analysis is introduced to complete the response of deep beams and applied to simple and continuous deep beams which previously analyzed using the strutandtie model. The effect of key features of deep beams are investigated. Consequently, the limitation boundaries among slender, short, and deep beams are proposed. Also, full design steps and recommendations using the strutandtie approach are introduced. |
