Abstract

The present thesis aims to determine the global and diffuse solar radiation over ElMansoura City, as well as, for any location in Egypt. The thesis consists of three chapters in addition to the conclusion, references and Arabic summary. The 1st chapter consists of the historical review on the global and diffuse solar radiation, which shows the previous methods for determination of both global and diffuse solar radiation. The methods of determination of global solar radiation depend on the sunshine duration and other meteorological parameters. The methods for determination of the diffuse solar radiation mainly depend on the correlations between the diffuse fractions with the clearness index. The 2nd chapter is dealing with the methods of calculation of global and diffuse solar radiation. For the global solar radiation, Fourier analysis was applied to obtain the Typical Annual Time Functions for seven stations in Egypt, which used for correlating the daily and monthly global solar radiation with the latitude for different orders. There are two methods of correlations used for the estimation of the diffuse solar radiation. The first method is the usual method, which correlates the diffuse fraction with clearness index. The second method is an advanced method for determination of relations between the monthly diffuse solar radiation and the latitude for different orders. The 3rd chapter is dealing with the results and discussion. In this chapter the values of the global and diffuse solar radiation from different models are estimated and discussed. The MBE, RMSE and ttest are used in the comparison between measured and estimated values from the models. The comparison shows that the 3rd order of latitude is more suitable for estimating the global solar radiation than the other orders. For the diffuse solar radiation, the suggested empirical equations gave more agreement with the measured data than the models of Trabea (1999) and of ElSebaii and Trabea (2003).
