Abstract

Lead (Pb2+) is widely distributed in the environment and is known as an important environmental toxicant, the toxic effect of lead include the structural and functional abnormalities in many organs. To study the effect of lead acetate on the histological, histochemical and ultrastructural changes in the rat accessory sex organs, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate. In addition counter the action of lead by Vit. E administration. Seventy adult male albino rats ranging from 150 200 grams were used in this study. They were classified into 3 groups: Group I: Included 12 rats which were injected intraperitoneal with normal saline and used as controls. Group II: Included 36 rats which were devied into 3 groups; A, B and C of 12 animals each. All animals were injected intraperitoneal once weekly with 10mg lead acetate/Kg body weight: <U+2022> Group A: rats were injected lead acetate for 4 weeks. <U+2022> Group B: rats were injected lead acetate for 8 weeks. <U+2022> Group C: rats were injected lead acetate for 16 weeks. Group III: Included 12 rats which were injected weekly with 10mg lead acetate/Kg body weight and 150mg Vit.E/Kg chow was added to homogenized standard laboratory chow. All groups showed many changes in the histological histochemical and ultrastructure of the three organs but the most affected group was group C. After administration of Vit.E the changes that produced by lead acetate markedly improved denoting the efficacy of Vit.E as a powerfull antioxidant.
