Abstract

The objective of the thesis is to analyze some stylistic mannerisms in Alexander Pope<U+2019>s two poems: ?The Rape of the Lock? and ?The Dunciad? for showing how such stylistic features positively contributed to the imagined world and the satirical message that Pope portrayed. The stylistic method of analysis used by the researcher is based on three approaches: contextualization, analysis of the style of the two poems in relation to lexis, phonology, figures of speech and syntax and finally comparison. The thesis is divided into three chapters as follows: Chapter One: Language in the Augustan Age attempts a linguistic <U+2013> stylistic analysis of the major features of poetry in the Augustan Age to place Alexander Pope<U+2019>s poetry and his two poems ?The Rape of the Lock? and ?The Dunciad? in the proper context of the Age and establish the linguistic background against which both poems have been composed. Chapter Two: Lexis gives a stylistic analysis of the lexis of the two poems under consideration in terms of monosyllabic versus polysyllabic words, the use of adjectives and rhetorical figures of speech such as parallelism, alliterations and assonance, anaphora, zeugma, simile, personification, and irony. Chapter Three: Syntax provides a syntactico <U+2013> stylistic account of Pope?s poetry as manifest in his two poems. In this analysis, focus is on the use of verbal rhyme, close and open couplets, and the couplet norm for each poem. Furthermore, the sentence types that Pope uses ranging from simple, compound to complex are dealt with and their functions whether rhetorical, exclamatory or imperative are explained with examples of verse for each type and function. Finally, the conclusion provides a summary of the mannerisms of Alexander Pope in ?The Rape of the Lock? and ?The Dunciad? which is as follows: first Pope uses verbal rhyme, both closed and open couplets and a couplet norm that distinguishes each of his poems. Second, he uses monosyllabic words more than polysyllabic ones which indicates the simplicity of his diction. However, the simplicity of diction is associated with the depth of meaning that can be observed from his using words in a new way and from his antithetical meanings. Third, he is fond of using both pre and postposition adjectives. Fourth, he manipulates various figures of speech with great excellence, e.g. parallelism, alliteration, assonance, anaphora, zeugma, simile, personification, and irony. Fifth, his use of parenthesis is quite frequent. Finally, his sentences vary from questions, exclamations to imperative sentences with verbs at the end of the line for the sake of rhyme.
