Abstract

This thesis is to shed light on a magnificent unique area, not only in Egypt, but in the whole world, Fayum depression has long been famous for its characteristic landscape, varied geological structures and its content of vertebrate fossils specially mammals. from the beginning of the appearance of placental mammals till now, there are 28 orders allover the world,11 of them are found here in Fayum. This thesis is considered the first one in the Egyptian universities to deal with the vertebrate fauna of Fayum. The present thesis depends on paleontological and geological studies on the vertebrate fossils, which have been collected by various scientific missions and deposited in the Egyptian Geological Museum from four formations Gehannam Formation, Birket Qarun Formation, Qasr ElSagha Formation, and Gebel Qatrani Formation in Fayum depression, Egypt. It is confined mainly to the vertebrate fossils specially mammals, presenting a detailed systematic and description work as well as for the accompanying association of other vertebrate fossils which were found with the mammalian fossils in the formations. The study presents also a detailed lithostratigraphic classification for the Paleogene sequences from which the studied faun have been collected. This thesis presents also a detailed discussion on the anatomy of vertebrates and the methods to extract and treat it to be ready for studying and identification. In addition to the abstract and the Arabic summary, the thesis includes 8 chapters in 269 Pages. The thesis includes 5 figure, 5 tables, 31 plates and 261 references.
