Abstract

Three hundred subjects (120 males and 180 females) were examined by CT. Coronal and axial cuts were analyzed to detect the different anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses. The maxillary sinus showed hypoplasia (10 %), septated maxillary sinus (16%) and teeth projection (4%).Extensive pneumatization of the frontal sinus (38%), frontal hypoplasia (26 %) and frontal aplasia (4 %) were reported. Enlarged agger nasi, concha bullosa and large ethmoid bulla encroach upon the frontal recess. Variations of the sphenoidal sinus were: hypoplasia, extensive pneumatization, septation, unseptation, bulging of the optic nerve and internal carotid, pneumatized anterior clinoid process and pneumatized pterygoid process were evaluated. The agger nasi cells were reported in (72%), Haller`s cells (30%) and Onodi cell (70 %). The uncinate process showed hypoplasia, elongation, uncinate bulla, lateral deviation and medial deviation. Also, well pneumatized ethmoid bulla (37 %) and pneumatized crista galli (6%) were observed. Concha bullosa, paradoxically curved middle turbinate, turbinatetoturbinate attachment and pneumatized superior turbinate were observed. In both male and female the volumes of the paranasal sinuses were larger on the left side than on the right except the maxillary sinus in males and the ethmoidal sinus in females. The volumes of all studied paranasal sinuses (on both sides) were significantly larger in male subjects than in female subjects except the volume of left maxillary sinus which showed insignificant difference between male and female.
