Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out during the summer seasons of 2000 and 2001 at Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Kafr El­Shiekh Governorate, to investigate the response of maize to nitrogen as soil fertilizer, bio­fertilizer as seed inoculation and compost materials from rice straw as organic fertilizer. A split split plot design with four replications was used in the two seasons of study. The main plots were devoted to nitrogen fertilizer levels 0,25,50,75,100 and 125% of the recommended dose (120 kg N/fed. as urea 46% N) The sub­plots were allocated to organic manure (with and without additions of 5 tons/fed). The sub­sub­plots were assigned for bio­fertilizer (with and without seed inoculation). The plot area was (3.5 m long and 3.0 m width. The N fertilizer rates were splited to three equal doses, the first dose was added just before planting, and the second was prior to the first irrigation. While the third dose was added prior the second irrigation. The main results could be summarized as follows: Maize grain and straw yield increase as the mineral nitrogen fertilization level increase up to 150 kg/fed, but nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) increase up to 120 kg/fed and then decline. This result is in a good harmony with the recommendation of Ministry of Agriculture and Land reclamation. Using organic and/or biological fertilization (inoculation) enhances and promotes NUE, so that organic and/or inoculation could partially substitute the mineral nitrogen fertilization and compensate the deficiency in mineral nitrogen fertilization. The organic N fertilization could compensate 50 kg from the mineral N while biological N fertilization compnsate 10 kg N fertilization. This matter would return with a good impact and worth hazard on the environmental conditions as well as maize yield quality.
