Abstract During the last century more than 2051 nuclear test were done by 7 countries. In correspondence, the need for efficient tools to discriminate between natural earthquakes and nuclear explosion were arise. In this study we discriminate between two events. A nuclear explosion took place in lopnor China with magnitude 6.1 and an earthquake from the closest area with a magnitude 5.5. Spectral seismogram shows that the frequency content of the nuclear explosion differ from that of the earthquake where the Pwave is rich with high frequencies in nuclear explosion than that of the earthquake. Also it was observed from the spectral seismogram that the energy decay very rapidly for the nuclear explosion than that of the earthquake. However, Spectral magnitude shows that the magnitude increases rapidly in the high frequencies then rapidly decays for low frequencies in the nuclear explosion than in the earthquake The moment tensor inversion results showed that in the case of the earthquake the isotropic component equals to zero, so the total force is deviatoric reflecting its mechanism (strikeslip) and the large dimension of its source. On the other hand, in the case of the nuclear explosion the isotropic component dominates (equals to 74%) reflecting the isotropism character which usually associate these small explosion sources. |
