Abstract

One of the important functions of gastrointestinal epithelium is the secretion of mucus. The major component of mucus is a high molecular weight glycoprotien. Many diseases affect the colon. Inflammatory diseases include ulcerative colitis, crohn?s disease, bilharzial infection and other parasitic infestations. Malignant lesions are serious diseases that affect the colon. Egypt is at increased risk of colonic diseases due to increased incidence of bilharziasis. The present study aims to investigate the type of mucin in inflammatory, benign and malignant human colonic lesions. Also, to study the demographic analysis of human colonic lesions in Dakahlia Governorate. The present study was performed on 160 colorectal biopsy specimens. They were collected from Gastroenterology Center, Mansoura University.
