Abstract

Thiosemicarbazones have attracted special attention due to their activity against protozoa, influenza, smallpox, malaria, tuberculosis and cancer. The work is focused on the preparation and characterization employing elemental and thermal analyses, spectroscopic (UVVis, IR, H NMR and mass) of some thiosemicarbazone derivatives and their Bi(III), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes. The electrochemical behavior of the ligands and their complexes is studied by cyclic voltammetry. Also, a simple, rapid and selective procedure for separation and spectrophotometric determination of bismuth(III) ions is suggested. Hence, a brief description of the overall work can be summarized as follows:In chapter one a brief literature survey on the complexation of thiosemicarbazones with great attention to Bi(III), Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions chelates. The review also includes an idea about the separation and determination of Bi(III) by solvent extraction technique and the types of charge transfer reactions together with a literature collection on the separation and spectrophotometric determination of Bi(III) ions. The second chapter covers the experimental and illustrates the experiments used in this work. It includes list of reagents, stock solutions along with the physical measurements and instrumentation. characterization of the ligands and their complexes by several tools.
