Abstract

The present study aimed at developing some writing skills for first year secondary school students through using cooperative writing strategy and competitive writing strategy. Thus, the problem of the study was stated ii the following statement:
Secondary school students EFL writing performance is week. Students lack the ability to generate ideas, develop opinions, and organize their writing. Their final writing product is at best a mediocre one.
The study adopted the experimental design, i.e., using two experimental and one control groups. The first experimental group received cooperative writing training by the researcher. The second experimental group received competitive writing training by the researcher. At the same time, the control group continued to study in the traditional way. The writing training (cooperative writing and competitive training) was provided to the two experimental groups (cooperative learning group and competitive learning group) at ElThanawia ElGededa Secondary School for Girls in Mansoura city. The training was provided in twelve sessions, two sessions for two hours per week for each group.
The training was conducted during the second term of the academic year 2005/ 2006. The following instruments were designed by the researcher; A Writing Performance test used for Pre and Post testing and FollowUp Test, a SelfEsteem Questionnaire, Attitude Towards Cooperative Learning Questionnaire, Attitude Towards Competitive Learning Questionnaire, Writing Scale: PeerEditing and Writing Scale: SelfEditing. The present study provided evidence for the effectiveness of using cooperative writing strategy in developing students? writing performance. The study also highlighted the merits of competitive writing strategy in developing students writing performance. The process writing approach can be integrated successfully with the cooperative writing procedures and with the competitive writing procedures due to some common grounds among the three of them.
