Abstract Objective : This study was done to assess and evaluate the different surgical maneuvers used for management of rectal cancer presented to Gastroenterology center in last 5 years from the end of July 1999 to the end of July 2004. Methods : Our study included a retrospective analysis of (138) patients with rectal carcinoma presented to Gastroenterology center in last 5 years from the end of July 1999 to the end of July 2004. Results : Abdominoperineal resection (86 cases), 42 cases (55.3%) showed no recurrence, 34 cases (44.7%) showed recurrence, 19.7 % had local recurrence only, 5.3% had systemic recurrence only, and 19.7% had both local and systemic recurrence. Anterior resection (52 cases),21 cases (46.7%) showed no recurrence, 44 cases (53.3%) showed recurrence, 17.8% had local recurrence only, 15.5% had systemic recurrence only, and 20% had both local and systemic recurrence. Conclusion : Although abdominoperineal resection was associated with more early postoperative mortality, incidence of wound infection; postoperative urinary and sexual complications than anterior resection, it had better survival and low recurrence rate than anterior resection. |
