Abstract Acute ankle sprain is a common problem in the current medical practice. There are many options to mange this condition. These include conservative measures like RICE, ultrasound and laser therapy and surgery. The aim of the current study is to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of some of these modalities namely; RICE, ultrasound and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). The study included 30 patients of acute ankle sprain randomly divided into age and sex matched three 10 patients groups; first group received only RICE as a treatment for their condition, while second group received RICE plus therapeutic ultrasound as a therapy and the third group received RICE plus LLLT as a management protocol. The clinical outcome of the three protocols were recorded at zero level (day of diagnosis), 2 days, 4days, 7 days and 14 days stations, then data were evaluated and compared statistically. It was found that RICELLLT regimen was generally superior to the other two regimens regarding pain relief at the 4 and 14 days station (p<0.05) edema reduction at 2,4,7 and 14 days stations (p<0.001) and tenderness alleviation at 7 days station (p<0.01). Regarding walking ability, RICELLLT regimen was statistically better than RICE only regimen at 4, 7 and 14 days stations. Comparatively, RICEUltrasound regimen had advantage over RICE only regimen only in pain relief at the 14 days station. Conclusively, RICELLLT regimen should be considered as an advantageous management option in the treatment of acute ankle sprain particularly because its ability to markedly reduce ankle edema in these patients; a feature attributed to the peculiar biological characteristics of laser beams. |
