Abstract

The experiments were carried out in ElSerw Agricultural Research Station during agricultural spring seasons 2004 and 2005 and the shredded material were collected from Refaey Village, Dakahlia Governorate to evaluate conversion cotton stalks after shredding to compost.
The main objective of the present study is to determine the following factors: Possibility of using cotton stalks to produce compost, minimizing the costs of compost production by using a developed local threshing machine, reducing the environmental pollution which resulted from burning agricultural residues . The treatments were carried out in two stages: The shredding stage: cotton stalks shredding tests. All treatments were carried out on cotton stalks at three different drum speeds(38.5, 48.14, 57.77m/s) and three different clearances(3, 4, 5cm) with different three stalks moisture contents(20%, 16%, 13%).The best results of number of pieces in 5g and bulk density were at (S3= 57.77m/s, C1= 3cm, M3= 13%) and the best results of shredder capacity were at (S3= 57.77m/s, C3= 5cm, M3= 13%). The composting stage, converting shredded stalks materials into compost in sacs. All treatments were carried out on shredded stalks at three different additives and three different sizes of shredded pieces with three composting periods. The best results of N%, C%, C/N ratio and pH were at(D3=525g ammonium sulphate + 105g calcium superphosphate + 1500g soil, T3= 5months and number of pieces in 5g (93))
