Abstract

Introduction: It is well established that tumor growth and the development of distant metastasis is angiogenesis dependent. VEGF plays a fundamental role in regulation of normal and abnormal angiogenesis. Aim of work: This study was designed to evaluate the prognostic value of VEGF expression in cancer breast. Patients and methods: The study included 25 patients with breast cancer where 16 case remained non metastatic while 9 cases developed distant metastasis. Results: 8 cases showed high VEGF expression, 15 cases showed moderate expression and 2 cases showed negative expression. There was significant correlation between VEGF expression and development of distant metastasis while there was no significant correlation between tumor size, grade or nodal status and the development of distant metastasis VEGF expression was significantly correlated with DFS but not with OS. Also, it was not significantly correlated with tumor size, nodal status or tumor grade. Conclusions: This study suggests that patient with high VEGF expression have biologically aggressive disease and conventional adjuvant therapy may not be able to reduce the risk of recurrence and VEGF can be used as both a target of therapy and a potentially predictive marker for novel therapeutic strategies based on inhibition of angiogenesis.
