Abstract

The study comprised 41 obese patients as a test group with age ranging from 20 to 30 years and 10 healthy nonobese subjects of matched age and sex as a control group. The stud’ied cases were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination. Skinfold thickness over the subscapular and triceps area were measured by skinfold caliper. Waist and hip circumferences were measured by a nonstretching cloth tape measure. The psychologicl status of the individuals were assessed by the Middle-Sex Hospital and Kasr-EI-Aini personality - inventory. The laboratory investigations included fasting and 2 hour post prandial blood glucose. cholesterol. triglycerdies. uTic acid and determination of plasma insulin. C-peptide and antiinsulin antibodies by radioimmunoaSsay. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly higher in the obese group in comparison with the control group. The localization of fat either centrallY or in the upper part of the body were independently associated with higher blood pressure. Correlations of plasma insulin with either systolic or diastolic blood pressure revealed significant positive correlations.
