Abstract
Although tumors of the salivary glands comprise less than 3% of all neoplasms in the head and neck reg-ion, they are of unusual interest and challenge to the surgeons because of their complex and varying array of histologic types and their regional anatomic relation- ships 0 The salivary glands are usually divided into two groups The major salivary glands, which are the paired paro-tid, submandibular and sublingual glands,. and The minor salivary glands, which are located in the mucous membrane of the upper part of the airodigestive tract Approximately 80-85 %of all salivary gland neopl-asms occur in the parotid gland, 10-15 % in the submandi-bular gland and approximately 5% occur in the ”sublingual and the other minor glands In terms of malignancy, in general, as the size of the salivary gland decreases, the incidence of malig¬nancy increases;the tumors also have a variable degree of aggressiveness either benign or malignant.
