Abstract

Thepres’ent work was intended to study the possible effects of acute viral infections common in infancy and childhood such as mumps, measles, chickenpox , viral hepatitis and viral myocarditis on the function of the two vital organs namely the heart and liver. It comprised 50 infants and children with acute viral infections chosen from pediatric department and pediatric outpatient clinic of Mansoura University Hospital and Mansoura fever Hospital. Ten cases of each of mumps, chickenpox, measles, viral hepatitis and viral myocarditis were chosen. They were subjected to thorough clinioal examina¬tion and investigations inoluding plain x-ray ohest PoA view for assessment of the cardiac size, electrocardio¬graphY and determination of serum enzymes including AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, CPK and GGT. As regards myocardial involvement along the course of these viral infections, myo caz-df. tis was proved to occur in cases of measles, chiokenpox and viral myocar¬ditis. Cases of measles exhibited significant cardio¬megaly, elevation of cardiac enzymes, CPK and LDH.
