Abstract Pregnancy is diabetogenic mainly due to higher levels of oestrogen, progesterone, A.C.T.H., prolactin and HbAic is markedly higher in diabetics than non diabetics and more representitive of diabetic control than glucose tolerance test as its level gives an idea about the control of diabetes during the previous one to two months. HbAic per cent has no relation with the age of onset orland duration of diabetes. Diabetics showed higher incidence of perinatal mortality and morbidity than non diabetics. Congenital anomalies, prematurity and respiratory distress syndrome are common causes of perinatal mortality in diabetics. With good control of diabetes as indicated by lower levels of HbAic %, there is marked improvement in the perinatal outcome as indicated by decreased perinatal mortality, decreased birth weight, higher Apgar scores at one and five minutes and higher neonatal blood glucose levels. Estimation of HbAic % late in pregnancy in diabetic ladies. |
