Abstract

In this study, the porphyrin metabolism was studied 1n some malignant diseases e.g acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease to study the disturbances in haem blosynthetic pathway aiming at providing some additional useful criteria for the diagnosis of these diseases. This study was carried out on children (n ” 21) from both sexes with approximate who are suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and on adult patients. (n ” 34) with different ages and sexes suffering acute lymphoblastic leukemia, (n” 14). non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. (n ” 14). and Hodgkin’s disease. (n=6). In addition two groups of healthy children (n ” 14) and adults (n ” 17) were studied for comparison. Venous blood samples from patients and control subjects were subjected to the assay of the activities of both b-amino levul i nic acid dehydratase (ALA-D), uroporphyri nogen-l-synthetase (URO-l-S) and glutathione reductase (G-R) in addition to the quantitative determination of haemoglobin (Hb) percent, total porphyrins. protoporphyrin IX (PP), haem and reduced glutathione (GSH). Also the the concentration of coproporphyrin (CPl. Uropor phyrin(UR). ~- ~-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and porphobilinogen PSG) were estimated in the urine of all patients and their control groups.
