Abstract

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of lymph in the inter- stitium caused by obstruction of intrinsic disorders of the lymph channels or nodes. It may be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to other benign or mali" ~ "nant conditions such as trauma or neoplasm or infection (Rustgi et. al.. 1985). Although they are significantlY different. they are generallY managed in the same manner (Miller. 1977). The aetiology of primary lymphoedema is not known. but the early recognition and management of lymphoedema may help to avoid progresion and complication of the disease (Lewis & Wald, 1984). The diagnosis of primary lymphoedema rests on a carefully taken clinical history and results of physical examination (Smeltzer et. al., 1985). Howevere. investigational proced¬ures are available to assess the lymphatic function. the degree of lymphoedema and document changes with therapy. Proper manangement of chronic lymphoedema necessarily varies with magnitude of involvement (Shumaker. 1981). Mild to moderate lymphoedema are handled well by conservative means (Schnur, 1977), while severe cases demand operative intervention.
