Abstract Ultrasonography is one of the most important diagnostic tools, being noninvasive , safe and effecient . Its use in the gynecologic field has enabled physicians to assess pelvic tumours in detail. A hundred women with clinically suspected benign uterine masses admitted to the gynecology department, Mansoura University Hospital for surgical interference were enrolled in this study aiming to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography in diagnosing their lesions in a trial to narrow the differential diagnosis and improve the patient management. Patients were subjected to : history taking, thorough clinical examination, sonographic examination including both transabdominal and transvaginal techniques . Patients were then subjected to surgery (myomectomy in 12 cases and hysterectomy in 88 cases). The specimens obtained by surgery were thoroughly examined .. macroscopically and microscopically by a pathologist with special concern . to the masses as regard their diagnoses, numbers, sites, sizes and the presence or absence of complications. t ’ ’The sonographic findings were then compared with the post operative naked eye and pathologic findings . Finally, sensetivity , and specificity of ultrasonography have been calculated for both the transabdominal and transvaginal techniques. |
