Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of three allelochemicals of plant origin namely pyrogallic acid (a tannin compound), quercetin and hesperidin (flavonoids compounds) on some biological and physiological criteria including ingestibility, digestibility and food utilization in addition to some histopathological effects on larvae of the European corn borer (ECB) Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner. The incorporated Tannins and Flavonoids compounds as pure active ingredients into semi-artificial diet were proved to be effective against Ostrinia nubilalis larvae especially at higher concentrations of 5x104 M and 2.5x10-4 M. The adverse effect on larval growth and other biological criteria were verified physiologically by the suppressed efficiency of food utilization and were more confirmed by the histopathological results. Accordingly the tested tannins and flavonoids compounds are considered as defensive mean against Ostrinia nubilalis larvae, leading to somewhat progress in its control or raising the host resistance against pest attack.
