Abstract

This thesis begins with the aim of investigation and plan of the work, in which the statement of the problem is included. The work comprises three chapters. The first one deals with a general review on the coordination chemistry, biological activity of azo compounds mainly from the structural view point. The second chapter is concerned with the experimental work. Five azo ligands. were synthesized La, Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Ho polymeric complexes are described. The elemental analyses and the different physical techniques employed are discussed. Preparation of solutions (metal salts, ligands and solvents) were described. The third chapter includes the results and discussion and consists of four parts: In the first part the results obtained from the potentiometric studies of [HL1-HL5] are given. In the second part the successive stability constants (log K1 and log K2) of the complexes of HL1-HL5 with Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ were determined using different computional methods in 10% (v/v) DMF-water mixture at 298, 308 and 318 K. For all the complexes formed log K1 > log K2, because the vacant sites of the metal ions are more freely available for the tinding of a first ligand than for a second one. In the third part, Novel five polymeric dioxouranium(VI) of azosulphadrugs [(azodrug substances) azobenzene sulphonamides] have been prepared for the first time and their infrared spectra have been investigated. The infrared spectra of the samples were recorded and their fundamental vibrational wave number was obtained. In the fourth part Novel supramolecular rare earth polymeric hydrazone complexes of 5-sulphadiazineazo-3-phenyl-2-thiaxo-4-thiazolidinone (HL) of the composition [(Ln)2 (HL)3(NO3)6]n (where Ln = La(1), Y(2), Pr(3), Nd(4), Sm(5), Gd(6) and Ho(7)) have been prepared and characterized on the basis of their chemical analyses, magnetic measurements, conductance, visible and IR spectral data.
