Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to study clinicopathological changes of stunting syndrome (SS) in broilers. The first experiment was to study the effect of age on experimental infection with SS in broilers . This experiment was conducted on twenty (20) Hubbard broiler chicks where ten (10) chickens 19 day old and other one day old , all were infected orally with (0.5 ml ) of RSS infected inoculum . The second experiment was to determine the clinicopathological changes, induced by experimental infection with stunting syndrome agents including reovirus in broiler and the effect of treatment with Vit. A and zinc bacitracin. Gps (1) was the control. Gps. (2&3) were treated with zinc bacitracin and vitamin A at a dose of 200 gm/ton and 10,000 iu/kg diet respectively. Gp. (4-6) were orally infected with (0.5 ml) of stunting runting syndrome agents (RSS) infectious inoculum. Gps. (5&6) were treated with zinc bacitracin and vitamin A, respectively . Gp. (4) showed normocytic normochromic anemia ,leukopenia and lymphopenia . Blood ALT, AST, creatinine and uric acid were elevated in the infected chickens throughout the experiment. Also they showed hypoglycemia , hypocholesterolemia, hypoproteinemia, hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia and hypothyroidism (T3&T4). Gp. (5) showed improved body weight and kidney function. Vitamin A supplement (gp. 6) improved the intestine , liver and pancreas functions. It act as immunostimulant with a subsequent improvement of the body weight. It could be concluded that chickens more than two weeks old are more resistant to SS caused by reovirus infection. Stunting syndrome is immunosuppressant which could be predisposes to different opportunistic microorganisms .Zinc bacitracin and Vit. A could reduce the side effects of RSS disease.
