Abstract This study was designed to evaluate the effect of preoperative administration of caudal morphine in pediatric cardiac surgery on the weaning from CPB, time to extubation and postoperative outcomes. This prospective double blinded study included 60 patients with age ranging from 2 to 12 years of either sex submitted for congenital heart surgery requiring CPB under general (control group, n=30) or general combined with caudal analgesia(caudal group, n=30). The data recorded in the present study suggest that preoperative administration of caudal morphine in children submitted for congenital heart disease repair requiring CPB resulted in earlier extubation, intra and postoperative hemodynamic stability, lower pain score, lower doses of postoperative morphine requirements. Caudal morphine didn’t affect the weaning from CPB and ICU and hospital length of stays. This study indicates that preoperative administration of caudal morphine is recommended in all children submitted for open heart surgery in whom early extubation is planned as it decreases the total doses of fentanyl requirements, facilitates early extubation and allows good postoperative pain control. |
