Abstract
The remarkable weakness in the beginning readers’ ability to decode words due to the lack of acquiring phonics and phonemic awareness skills was the focus of the present study.
A phonics-based program was designed for developing the reading readiness skills including visual and auditory discrimination skills.
The subjects of the study were 80 boys and girls, aged 6-7 year olds and enrolled in two primary 1 classes. Forty pupils had the program with the school syllabus and their progress was assessed using pre-post applications of a reading readiness test, auto games and a beginning reader’s chart. The other 40 pupils had the school syllabus only and their progress was assessed by the applications of the test only. Analysis of the data revealed that the program was effective as the experimental group outperformed the control group and the highest mean score in the post test was 44.76 in favour of the experimental group.
The results showed that systematic teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness is important for early exposure to reading.
