Abstract Introduction :tumor associated angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis .vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor are involved in this process Method.in this study we measure the serum level of VEGF and bFGF in patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma (n=34) compared with chronic viral hepatitis group (n=31) and healthy control (n=15) we also measure serum albumin, bilirubin, ALT ,AST, Alkaline phosphate as well as prothrombin concentration and prothrombin time. Results we found significant increase in VEGF and bFGF in HCC group compared with control group (p < 0.001). significant increase inVEGF in HCC compared to hepatitis group (p < 0.001), significant increase in bFGF in HCC compared to hepatitis group (p < 0.05), nosignificant increase in VEGF in hepatitis group compared to control group while bFGF is significantly increased in hepatitis group compared to control group (P = 0.001). non of liver function tests correlate with VEGF albumin shows negative correlation with bFGF(r = -.393) and positive correlation was found between bFGF and VEGF(r = .394). Conclusion: elevated levels of VEGF and bFGF suggesting that they may be related to the developmrnt of HCC , elevated level of bFGF in chronic viral hepatitis may serve as a new indicator of the progression of chronic liver disease. |
