Abstract

An experimental investigation on the behavior of the heat transferred from a horizontal oscillated cylinder, in a case of cross air flow was carried out. The investigation was concerned with the effect of dimensionless oscillation frequency (Sc), dimensionless oscillation amplitude (A/D), and Reynolds number on the rate of heat transfer. The oscillated cylinder had 53 mm O.D, the dimensionless oscillation frequency (Sc) of the cylinder was varied from 0.08 to 0.45, while the dimensionless oscillation amplitude (A/D) ranged between 0.037 and 0.27. The Reynolds number ranged between 3x 104 and 8.7 x104 and the rate of heat flux was varied from 480 to 3000 W/m2. The test rig of the present work was used for testing a cylinder and the obtained results were found to be in good agreement with the available data in the literature (within ± 5 %), while tests on an oscillating cylinder showed an enhancement in the rate of heat transfer of about 70% by comparison with stationary case (at Sc = 0.2 and A/D = 0.27). The present data have been correlated for Nusselt number as a function of dimensionless frequency (Sc), dimensionless amplitude (A/D) and Reynolds number (Re), with an average deviation of about ±4% relative to the experimental results.
