Abstract

Research Scope and Objectives: The earth pressure force on the wall is generally calculated in practice using Rankine’s theory, neglecting both the adhesion between the wall surfaces and the surrounding soil, and all dimensions of the wall.
The focus and the main objective of this study is to investigate the wall and soil behavior. In addition, the study is aimed to analyze the parameters affecting the stresses values on both retaining wall and surrounding soil.
For this purpose, in this work, the PLAXIS 3D [9] finite element analysis is conducted to study the effects of the various parameters. These parameters include wall thickness, wall height, wall leg thickness & its length and modulus of elasticity of wall material on the stresses.
Also, the study includes displacements of soil layer due to these stresses and comparing these results with the results of Rankine’s theory. The results were verified by conduction of a centrifugal test on modeled wall of the same shape used in the numerical study.
Thesis Organization:
The dissertation consists of eight chapters A summary of each chapter is presented in the following paragraphs: Chapter 1: “INTRODUCTION”,
Chapter 2: “ LITERRATURE REVIEW “ contains outlines of the various applications of the retaining wall, the current design methods of walls, the methods to predict the applied earth pressure on the walls.
In addition, the chapter includes the applications of the centrifugal tests on the retaining wall,
Chapter 3: “ CENTRIFUGE FACILITY “ describes the geotechnical C67-2 centrifuge facility at Al Mansoura University, the history of the geotechnical centrifuge and centrifuge scaling relations. Also, contains the description of the model container and instrumentations.,
Chapter 4: “ MATERIAL PROPERTIES ” includes the physical and mechanical properties of the used sand soil. The mechanical properties have been determined using undrained triaxial tests.
This chapter also includes the soil preparation details, test procedure, and test results for the conducted series of triaxial tests,
Chapter 5: “NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM “ contains a PLAXIS three dimensional finite element model is applied such that an interface element exists between the soil and the wall. Numerous trials have been made to calculate the earth pressures on walls by changing in the soil and wall properties, and compare the results with Rankine’s theory results as it is the most popular methods of estimating the earth pressure,
Chapter 6: “CENTRIFUGE MODELING TEST “ describes one centrifuge experiment was conducted to study the soil and wall behavior and the external failure mechanisms for the excavation, supported by the retaining wall, Chapter 7:“VERIFICATION OF NUMERICAL RESULTS” The results of centrifuge experiment is compared with the numerical analysis which are obtained using PLAXIS- 3D. The comparison is a more or less sort of verification as the centrifuge work included a single test and
Chapter 8: “CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS“ contains the derived conclusions from this study. These conclusions include the comparison between the numerical analysis results and the Rankine’s theory results. Finally, comparing the resulted deformed shape and value of the tested soil from the numerical analysis and the centrifugal tests.
